Name

What Is Ceramic Coating?

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer made from nano-ceramic silicon dioxide (SiO₂) that is applied by restoration and collision shops to a car’s paint. It bonds permanently to the surface, creating a tough, water-repellent, and UV-resistant layer. This protective coating helps keep out water, dirt, and oxidation, while also making the paint look glossier and richer in color for a 5+ year duration.

The coating provides hydrophobicity or water-repelling qualities. The layer has the benefit of preventing water from spreading out on the paint and leaving water spots after the rain or a car wash. Ceramic coating is often described as a permanent glass shield over your car’s factory paint.

Where may car coatings be applied?

Coatings are available for paint, wheels, and glass at One Dream Customs.

Our Ceramic Coating Process

We use a multistep ceramic coating process to get the job done right each and every time. Our techs are meticulous in preparing the car for the coating and then applying it.

Our 8 Step Ceramic Coating Process

Step 1: Full Vehicle Inspection & Documentation

We take detailed photos and notes of your car’s current paint condition, including any scratches, swirls, or chips, oxidation, or water spotting, before we begin. This gives us a clear before-and-after comparison.

Step 2: Foam Pre-wash

We start with a pH-neutral foam wash to remove surface dirt, pollen, bug remnants, and other contaminants. This step is essential in the preparation process to remove any contaminants from the surface of the car.

Step 3: Bucket Hand Wash & Wheel and Tire Decontamination

Following the foam pre-wash, we wash the car by hand with specially made mitts and two buckets. The car’s tires and wheels are cleaned with specialized tools and cleaning products.

Step 4: Paint Correction and Decontamination

Before application, we perform a thorough paint correction process including decontamination, defect removal, and surface refinement. We use non-silicone polishing compounds that correct imperfections rather than fill them, ensuring true, long-term results.
Note: We take the time to evaluate the overall paint condition and will change the polishing compound accordingly. Some vehicles require a heavy cut compound as the initial polishing. Some require a medium cut. We adjust, as needed.

Step 5: IPA Panel Wipe-Down & Surface Prep

We wipe down the surface with 70% isopropyl alcohol to remove all polish oils and residue. Any leftover oil can prevent the ceramic from sticking, so this step is critical.

Step 6: Ceramic Coating Application

Our installers work on each panel section by section in a climate-controlled bay, applying 2 layers of nano-SiO₂ coating. Each layer is smoothed with a microfiber applicator, allowed to set for a few minutes, then buffed.

Step 7: Cure Time & Quality Inspection

The coating requires 24–48 hours to cure at room temperature and 7–14 days to fully harden. We inspect every panel under high-intensity LED lighting and a coating thickness gauge before release. If we see anything we don't love, we fix it prior to releasing the car to you.

Step 8: Post-Coating Briefing

We walk you through your vehicle panel by panel, explain the care protocol (no wash for 7 days, pH-neutral products only). You also receive documentation of your coating for warranty and resale purposes.

What should you expect in the way of results?

The coating forms a durable, glass-like layer that protects against UV exposure, staining, and environmental wear while enhancing gloss, deepening color, and making the surface easier to maintain.

Who benefits from Ceramic Coating?

Ceramic coating is not a luxury product reserved for exotic or classic cars. It is a worthwhile investment for any car owner who cares about long-term protection, a glossy lasting finish,  lower maintenance, and preserving resale value.

Car Owners Who Benefit from Ceramic Coating

Daily Drivers Luxury & Exotic Owners Classic and Muscle Car Enthusiasts

BMW, Porsche, Genesis, Lamborghini, Porsche and Mercedes owners love the glossy look and the OEM-level protection ceramic coating provides. Show-quality gloss with swirl-resistant, mirror-like depth. Coating provides needed protection for muscle cars and classics.

Ceramic-coated vehicles earn higher resale values and often sell faster on the preowned market. Apply within the first 30 days and preserve factory-fresh paint before Tennessee roads, UV rays, and dealer lot exposure take effect.

The Benefits of Professional Ceramic Coating

Here are eight powerful reasons proven in the lab and trusted by car owners that make ceramic coatings a game-changer.

Extreme Hydrophobicity UV Oxidation Resistance 9H+ Scratch Resistance Chemical Resistance
Water instantly beads and slides off your vehicle at a ≥110° contact angle (ASTM D5725), so rain helps wash your car as you drive. You spend less time drying and dealing with water spots. Nashville summers can be harsh with the hot sun and harmful rays. The ceramic coating creates a ceramic shield, blocking UV rays that break down the chemical bonds in the pigmentation, causing paint to fade and lose color. Your new ceramic coating is more durable than your car’s original clear coat. It protects against light scratches, swirls, and minor parking lot scrapes. Bird droppings, tree sap, road salt, and industrial fallout can all be harmful to your vehicle. Ceramic coating is resistant to all of them.
Gloss Depth & Color Enhancement 80% Easier Cleaning Increased Resale Value Long-Duration Savings
The nano-layer of the coating works like a thin layer of glass, making the paint color look deeper and giving your car a shiny, mirror-like finish. Dirt and grime slide off the water-repellent surface instead of sticking to the paint. A quick rinse can usually suffice for the exterior cleaning. Cars with ceramic coating have been shown to sell quicker and for higher prices. When you protect the paint, you protect your investment. Annual waxing can cost $200 to $600 each year. A single professional ceramic coating lasts for 5 years on average.

Ceramic Coating vs. Wax & Sealants

Not all paint protection works the same way.

Wax and paint sealants form a layer on top of your car’s paint, while ceramic coating actually bonds with the surface. This key difference leads to much better protection in ways that matter most to car owners, like durability, hardness, self-cleaning, and yearly cost.

Protection Factor Ceramic Coating Paint Sealant Carnauba Wax DIY Spray
Durability 5 years 6–12 months 2–4 months 2–6 weeks
Hardness Rating 9H+ ~5H ~3H ~2H
Hydrophobicity ≥110° contact angle ~85° ~70° ~60°
UV Resistance Full UV-A/UV-B block Moderate Minimal None
Chemical Resistance pH 2–12 Partial Low None
Bond Type Permanent covalent Temporary adhesion Surface layer Topical residue
Professional Required Pro Recommended Pro Optional No Pro No Pro

According to 2023 industry data, professionally applied ceramic coatings last up to 5 times longer than consumer waxes and perform much better than sealants in every key area of paint protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does ceramic coating last on a car?

Professional ceramic coating lasts an average of 5 years.

Some factors that impact how long the coating lasts:

  1. Coating quality
  2. Number of layers applied
  3. Environmental conditions (UV intensity, rain, salt)
  4. Quality of application and prep

Yes. Nashville Tennessee’s intense UV radiation, summer heat, winter road salt, and heavy pollen season accelerate paint degradation faster than other areas of the county.  Professional vehicle ceramic coating reduces cleaning time by 80%, prevents UV oxidation, resists bird drop etching, and can raise the car’s resale value.

The primary difference is that wax sits on top of the paint and has a shorter lifespan, with an average of 2-3 months, compared to ceramic coating, which can last 5 years or longer. Ceramic coating chemically bonds with the paint’s clear coat, creating a semi-permanent layer of protection. Unlike wax, ceramic coating resists UV rays, chemicals, and heat. The hardness of a cured ceramic coating exceeds that of the factory clear coat. Wax enhances appearance; ceramic coating protects the paint’s structure and enhances the exterior appearance. They are fundamentally different products at different price points and duration.

Ceramic coating protects the vehicle from getting light scratches and swirl marks because of its 9H hardness, which exceeds that of your factory clear coat.  It creates a layer of protection for scratch-resistance.  It does not prevent deep scratches that may come from a car key, for example.

No. Ceramic wax is a consumer-grade spray with a low SiO₂ content. It lasts weeks, not years, and does not improve hardness. Professional ceramic coating is a multi-step, chemically bonded process that requires controlled application.
